There are several shows on television right now that make becoming a fashion designer look easy and fun. However, becoming a fashion designer takes a lot of work and great amount of commitment.
First of all, you will need to have a basic interest in design. Most of the greats who have made it in the business are there because they are so passionate about their work. They can tell you stories about how they started designing clothes for their dolls and graduated from there. You have to have the same passion to push yourself to become great.
Next you need to find a way to get training. Fashion school is a great way to learn everything that you need to learn. Schools are wonderful because not only will you learn but they often have placement programs for you to continue to learn after you have finished school. However, school is not for everyone. If you are the type of person who is not interested in earning a degree in fashion the road will be harder but it is still doable. You will need to get your training somewhere so the best way to go is to start working for a company, any company that is within your field and learn as much as you can.
Any designer will tell you that they did not make it right away. It took time and energy. What made the difference was taking every job that was offered to them. They were able to get a following and make a name for themselves.
Take every opportunity that you can find. What is great about our society today is that you can enter shows like Project Runway and really make a name for yourself. Try to make yourself known and put yourself out there as much as you can.
